The Hudson's Bay Company ("HBC") first occupied the site in 1884, conducting business from a small frame building. In 1890 the frame building was moved from the corner and the eastern portion of the present sandstone building was constructed. An 1895 addition doubled the store's size and forced removal of the old frame structure. A third addition in 1905 brought the building to its present size. The property was occupied by HBC until they sold it to The Royal Bank of Canada in 1913. Excepting the south and east façades, the entire building was re-built in 1978 with a structural steel frame and concrete floors. As one of many sandstone buildings of similar scale in the area, the Hudson's Block is a very important component of the streetscape and is significant for being from the first sandstone phase of Calgary downtown development. |
